The Sun Sets On You
Oil on canvas • 36” x 24” • 2023
While I was painting this piece I was listening to the audio book version of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and really thinking about and feeling the themes of the book from a queer perspective. On the one hand I am deliriously happy with Grace, and on the other I am filled with deep sadness for all the LGBTQ+ people who came before me and did not get to live in their truth. I think both are reflected in the pieces with this motif.
Flowers in full bloom, the stage in their cycle before death. Sunsets in spectacular glory, the last show before dark. The Golden Hour Collection, for me, is a delightful celebration of the last decade of painting and my life, and a share of the love I have and had for the many people who came in and went.
